Guardian of the Ancestors is a striking raku-fired ceramic bust that reflects Lester Jones’ deep reverence for African heritage and ancestral presence. The figure, poised with serene confidence, is adorned in meticulously hand-painted ceremonial markings in vibrant blues, oranges, and purples. These rhythmic, symmetrical patterns evoke body painting traditions used in rites of passage and spiritual protection.

Jones’ use of the raku technique—known for its unpredictability and organic surface effects—adds layers of earthiness and energy to the form. The matte textures and crackled glazes contrast with the intricate detailing, creating a visual and emotional resonance between permanence and impermanence.
